Open Gardens and Bioblitz – What a busy, nature filled weekend!

Horsforth Climate Action hosted a Weekend of nature events

Horsforth Nature Corridor Mass Bioblitz

We had a lovely sunny day for our first Horsforth bioblitz on Saturday 20th June.

What is a Bioblitz I hear you ask? A BioBlitz is a focused event where people work together to record as many plants and animals as possible in a set area and time.

We hope to repeat the Bioblitz on an annual basis and over time we can build up our knowledge about what wildlife lives in the corridor.

We started off at the top of the Horsforth nature corridor near Horsforth School and made our way down to Low Lane Rec, stopping off a few key points to spot nature on our way.

Between us we spotted over 100 observations using the iNaturalist App or spotter sheets. These included Red-Tailed Bubble Bees, Narcissus Bulb Fly, Tortoiseshell butterflies, Bracket Fungi, house sparrows, Wrens and robins!

At Low Lane Rec we were joined by Sam from The Aire Rivers Trust to tell us about RiverFly Monitoring and demonstrate how the monitoring is carried out. We got to see the various wildlife including Mayfly, Caseless Caddis and Freshwater Shrimp that live in Oil Mill Beck. Their presence in the beck helps to show the health of the beck and the pollution levels in the water.

You can still get involved in the Nature Corridor Bioblitz!

  1. Simply download the iNaturalist App
  2. Join the Horsforth Nature Corridor project
  3. Start uploading the nature you spot!

Horsforth Wildlife Friendly Open Gardens

It was another warm and sunny day for our wildlife friendly open garden event on Sunday 21st June.

With 5 gardens open for people to visit, there was lots of opportunities to see and learn about nature friendly gardening.

We had lots of interest in the gardens with people taking away ideas and inspirations for their own outdoor spaces.

We received some lovely positive comments about the day:

“I really enjoyed it! Thanks so much to all those who welcomed us into their lovely gardens”
A Big thank you to everyone who opened their garden and everyone who came along to visit!
