Horsforth Street Surveys

Transport is the largest emitting sector of greenhouse gases in the UK. By encouraging walking, wheeling and cycling we can help reduce this source of emissions. Over the summer of 2024 Horsforth Climate Action carried out three surveys of local streets – Town Street, New Road Side and Station Road – to look at potential obstacles that may prevent our local streets being used for walking, wheeling and cycling. The design and layout of our streets can make a difference to how easy these journeys can be.

We found a number of issues including:

  • Safety concerns:
Narrow footways, or obstructions in footways that may mean wheelchair users, people with double buggies may not be able to safely use pavements.
  • Pleasant Spaces:
Potential space for street trees, planting and additional seating to make our main streets more pleasant spaces to spend time.
  • Separated by roads:
Making it difficult for people to easily cross some of our streets.

The results of the surveys are available to view in a Google Map. Simply click on one of the coloured dots to view an image and a description of the issue identified. Please note the different colours of the dot identify the three different locations (New Road Side, Horsforth Town Street and Station Road), not the severity of the issue.

Horsforth Climate Action has passed these findings to Leeds City Council’s Connecting Leeds team to inform their recent Leeds Streets For All consultation on local streets. It has also be sent to  Horsforth Town Council and our local Leeds City Councillors.
